Dance: A Spiritual Affair

I have collected all of my writings on dance and published them in a small book, Dance: A Spiritual Affair. I will extend it over the coming years.img_2796

Dancing is an innately spiritual affair. It reaches beyond words to the essence of beauty. Its height is Divinity and its depth is humanity. It is the ever-moving balance between independence and intimacy. All the while, it reaches into the great Beyond. Continue reading “Dance: A Spiritual Affair”

Pittown: Repeat or Delete

Chapter 15: The Audition

As the students were on holiday, Ben took the rare opportunity of sitting alone in Tom & Hardy to look through the recently published, Eighty Years of The State Ballet.

“You in that?” asked Tom.

“Yep,” said Ben pointing to one of the later pages in the book.

“Impressive,” said Tom. Ben didn’t reply. “Can I have a look?” asked Tom pointing to the book. He opened it and searched the first few pages. “Found it,” he said. “That’s my grandfather there. He was one of the corps de ballet in the early days. He wasn’t really a ballet dancer. He was a self-taught ice skater but, back then, the company was desperate for male dancers so they took him.” Continue reading “Pittown: Repeat or Delete”

Pittown: Dirty Dancing

Chapter 13: Dirty Work

Merlyn could hear the cafe music as she approached a distinctive blue door on which the words Tom & Hardy had been freshly painted.

I’m a fool to do your dirty work
Oh yeah
I don’t wanna do your dirty work
No more
I’m a fool to do your dirty work
Oh yeah

“Hi Merlyn,” said Tom. “Glad you came to see my new place. Take a seat anywhere.” Continue reading “Pittown: Dirty Dancing”

We Are Here For God

Like many other things in life, dancing seems to revolve around strengthening one’s ego. I prefer to think of it as letting a little piece of life come through us, together with another person who is gracious enough to want to share a little piece of life with us. It could be something pure. Or powerful. Or happy. Is it possible that the purity, power or happiness could simply express itself through a trained body and mind without the ego and its never-ending problems? Continue reading “We Are Here For God”

Circles of Separation: Personal Barometer

The more we veer away from our true nature, the more unhappy we feel. When we align with our better self, we feel happy and content again.

Chapter 47: Cat Fights

“You’re a jealous cow,” screeched the black cat to the tabby cat that was cornered on the thin end of the branch.

“The Great One is not jealous of the gods you make,” said the tabby with the tenacity of a worthy opponent, “and neither am I.”

Gabriel heard the commotion not far from his window in the middle of the night. As it was not subsiding, he got up in exasperation, pulled on whatever clothes were at the end of the bed, and went outside to search for the source of the untimely disturbance. He shone his phone torch into the tree but neither cat moved. The tabby couldn’t move and the black one refused to. After assessing the situation, Gabriel threw some sticks towards the black cat who conceded temporary defeat and retreated. The tabby could then escape. Because of You

There is a deep-seated belief that we get love from other people and if that is not working for us then we will tend to feel that something is wrong with those who should have or should be providing it for us. If we could but see that in the normal egoic mind, there is always a because of you. The trouble is that the “you” that we are blaming got their pain from another “you”. Most people are in an, at least, partially sinking emotional ship. Few are squarely on dry land. The “you” that we are accustomed to blaming is a victim themselves – if not from someone else then from their own thoughts. Continue reading “Because of You”

Believing In Ourselves

Many people chastise themselves for not believing in themselves. Such belief is crucial to our development and happiness. However, the common approach to getting it is flawed and won’t help us. Mostly, what people really mean is to believe that they are better than other people, often, particular people known to them. Human nature constantly compares itself to others to work out how it is doing. Continue reading “Believing In Ourselves”

The Love of Devotion – Introduction

The Love of Devotionimg_4484

The Love of Devotion is the result of several decades of spiritual work. It began the day I first opened the metaphysical door and stepped into a world which, although only minimally understood at the time, was strongly desired. Metaphysics is concerned with the ultimate, primary, inner aspects of existence. It does not see life in material terms but sees life in terms of thought and it has a strong emphasis on healing. Everyone’s greatest need is for the healing and wholeness which spiritual awareness brings. However, we are often reluctant to commit to it. As Thomas Hora said, “It’s easy to be enlightened. It’s just not easy to be interested in it.” We, eventually, must come to the realisation that the purpose of our life is to align with our spiritual nature. Try as we do to find other options, there are no viable alternatives which will withstand the inevitable consequences of misplaced loyalties and loves. It is the way for us to find our soul-home. The Love of Devotion is, also, a personal journey. However, the struggles and lessons of one individual are, fundamentally, those of all mankind.

As students of life, we seek both relief from suffering and growth of happiness. Nothing is withheld by God, yet, it is only by our sincere searching and the evolutionary stage we have reached that we come into contact with various teachings which leave us wiser than when we first found them. Deeply considering uplifting ideas raises our consciousness from the realm of the material problem into the powerful and harmonious realm of the spiritual. It is what a dedicated spiritual practice is all about. We give up our own ideas, hurts, fears, and grudges and concede to the Greater. We expand and we heal. It becomes apparent that it would be impossible to feel alone as we are intimately connected to a thriving life-force. It is everything, yet, it is nothing. It grows silently and steadily. We are already it and It is already us. We continue to go forward with our spiritual practices and these practices increasingly envelop us in loveliness. We come out the other side as a transparent being; nameless but with the mark of God.

There is a grand and magnificent truth which radiates from within all life and from within each of us. I hope you enjoy sharing these beautiful, healing ideas which join us as spiritual co-inhabitants of a spiritual world. May you be blessed in your ongoing search. May there be peace in your days and relief from the never-ending dramas of normal human life. May you discover in your heart a sweet lightness, the luminescent glow of God’s beauty, and a true appreciation of the wonderful gift of life which glows unmarred through every human error. We are loved by the Divine, loved into existence. That, in itself, is enough to reassure each one of us of our inestimable worth.

This edition of The Love of Devotion includes quotes, at the end of each chapter, which were in the original edition and were meaningful to me at the time of writing.

Pas-De-Deux

When I was a child, I would sometimes dream about being a ballerina. It was never as part of the corps de ballet but nor was it about being a star soloist. It was always pas-de-deux. The important thing seemed, somehow, to be able to relate to another human being as a dancer and hopefully for something beautiful and meaningful to come out of it. As a child, of course, I could not express it in those words. Nevertheless, my unconscious mind must have known what it wanted because the dream never changed. Continue reading “Pas-De-Deux”
