Between the Frames

Here is an enjoyable practice for you to try. It is based on the idea that reality is constantly moving through time frames. The purpose of this exercise is to slow the process down enough for us to notice. Once we notice it, we can play with it.

Stopping the Show

In your mind, choose a place you love and where you feel peaceful. It may be somewhere you know well or somewhere from your imagination. It could be a beach, a forest, a farm, a park, a favourite room, or anywhere else that feels enjoyable to you.

Spend a few moments looking around and noticing the details. Notice the people, weather, trees, buildings, colours, sounds, and movement. Allow the scene to become vivid and alive.

Now imagine that everything stops, but you.

You remain aware and can still move, observe, and explore. But everything else stops completely. If you are at a beach, a seagull may be frozen in mid-flight, a dog may be suspended in the air as it jumps through the waves, children building sandcastles may be frozen in place, and grains of sand may hang motionless as they fall from a bucket.

Walk through the scene and examine it closely. Look at the details. Become completely certain that everything has stopped.

Cranking the Projector

Then, when you are ready, allow movement to return, but only a tiny amount. A wing moves slightly. A wave swells a little. A grain of sand falls a little further. A person takes the smallest part of a step.

Allow another tiny movement, and then another. Continue in this way for a while.

It is as though you are moving through the filmstrip one frame at a time. Reality is no longer flowing continuously. Instead, you are watching it unfold frame by frame. Watch reality reorganising itself moment by moment. It is unfolding through countless moments.

Changing it Up

Now begin making changes.

The dog turns into a friend. Or the child becomes your mother. Or the sea becomes a forest. Perhaps you change the weather. A cloudy day may become sunnier. A still day may become blustery.

Perhaps someone who is difficult appears. Allow the next frame to contain a different version of them — slightly different or wildly different, it’s up to you. They may become calmer, happier, kinder, or more relaxed.

You may change things about yourself — your appearance, energy, personality, or abilities. You may become healthier, stronger, more confident, more creative, or more alive.

New opportunities may appear. New people may arrive. New pathways may open. New possibilities may emerge.

Continue experimenting and changing the blueprint of your reality.

Blueprint of Reality

You are practising seeing reality as fluid rather than fixed.

You are practising recognising that between one frame and the next, there is the possibility of change.

By allowing fluidity, many people experience surprising opportunities, remarkable synchronicities, unexpected solutions, or outcomes that seem almost miraculous.

This exercise invites you to explore the possibility that reality contains far more flexibility than we usually assume. It invites you to experiment with the idea that each frame contains many possible versions of what could come next.

Speeding Up

As the frames continue moving, allow them to move more quickly. The film reel speeds up, and reality flows more naturally.

Yet even as it speeds up, continue seeing it as a sequence of frames. Continue recognising that reality is changeable. Continue recognising that reality is movable.

You are not separate from this process. You are participating in it.

Through your choices, beliefs, expectations, preferences, and state of being, you are constantly influencing which version of reality becomes the next frame.

Feel the Experience

As you make changes, notice how you feel.

Watch how it feels when life becomes more joyful, when things become easier, when opportunities appear, and when relationships improve. Notice how it feels when you become more connected, creative, peaceful, and alive.

The feelings represent the essence of what you are choosing. You are choosing a different reality to experience.

Flexibility

Although your conscious mind is creating a preferred blueprint, it does not always know the best way for reality to organise itself.

You may decide exactly how something should happen, exactly who should appear, or exactly how an opportunity should arrive. But life may have a better arrangement. Life may see possibilities that you cannot yet see and pathways that your conscious mind has not considered.

For this reason, hold firmly to the energy of what you prefer and lightly to the details. Hold on to the joy, the freedom, the peace, the connection, and the feeling. Allow the exact form to remain flexible.

The reality you have created may unfold exactly as imagined. Or it may unfold along a pathway even more wonderful than the one you consciously designed.

You are not trying to force an outcome. You are learning to experience reality as fluid, dynamic, and responsive.

When you are ready, return your attention to the present moment, bringing with you the feeling of the reality you most wish to experience.
